Tampa-St. Petersburg Radio Call Letter History
The following is a history of radio call letters in the Tampa-St. Petersburg, Florida, area. The information I have prior to 1950 is extensive, and the charts are probably complete; however, after 1950 there are probably some missing calls. A hyphen between calls indicates stations shared time on the same frequency (such as WFLA-WSUN). If you find missing or inaccurate information I would appreciate hearing from you via e-mail. Thanks to Richard Marino, Gavin Burt, Paul Smith, Stan Grams, Steve Alexsy, Don Kimberlin, Frank Berry, Tony Simon, Bob Crews, Jim Maloy, and Ed Ripley, who helped with this page,This page was last revised on Dec. 4, 2007.

According to Tony Simon, the frequency 940 originally had the calls WKGA before going on air. The Tampa Tribune, which originally had the construction permit for WKGA/940, acquired the intellectual and programming property of WFLA, and merged the two entities together, thereby creating WFLA/940 and ultimately putting that station on the air.
I recently added WMLD as the first call for 97.9, since White's Radio Log of Winter 1951 shows it. There is no station on 97.9 in the 1950 and 1956 Broadcasting Yearbooks, so this call apparently was in use only a short time or perhaps the station never actually went on the air.
