Paul Wayne Bailey, 65, of Hilton Head Island, S.C. and Ponta Vedra, Fla., passed peacefully Saturday, December 3, 2011 along-side his wife and two sons, at his home on Hilton Head. He died after an eight-year battle with cancer. Born May 29th 1946 in Beckley, to Paul Joseph Bailey and Anna Progloski Bailey, both deceased, of Cranberry W.Va. Mr. Bailey served in the U.S. Army and was stationed in Hanau Germany from 1966-1967. He attended Beckley College from 1967-1969. Mr. Bailey opened a building, construction, and Real Estate company in Beckley where he built and sold many spec homes in the Stanford Acres, Old Mill Village, and Woodcrest subdivisions. In 1986 Mr. Bailey relocated his family to Hilton Head Island where he continued his career as a developer and opened a real estate company in 1990. He served as owner/president of Paul Bailey Inc., and Ocean Properties, where he served as Broker-In-Charge for many years. He focused most of his real estate and developing career in Sea Pines Plantation, where he built custom, spec homes. Mr. Bailey enjoyed sailing his boat around the coastal waters of South Carolina and Georgia, with occasional charters in the Virgin Islands. He enjoyed entertaining family and friends, and took advantage of many other coastal activities, both on Hilton Head, and Ponta Vedra, but real estate was his true passion. He is a past member of the Civitan Club and the National Board of Realtors. He is presently a member of St. Francis by the Sea Catholic Church and the Serenata Beach Club in Ponta Vedra, Fla. Survivors include his wife, Victoria L. Bailey of Hilton Head; two sons, Paul W. Bailey II of Atlanta, Ga. and John Austin Bailey (wife Courtney E. Bailey) of Hilton Head. Four grandchildren, Paul W. Bailey III (Tre') and Bre-Ana Bailey of Cincinnati, Ohio and Sawyer Austin Bailey and Weston Lee Bailey of Hilton Head. Three sisters, Rosalie Thomas of Oak Hill, Anna-Lee Stempian of West Bloomfield, Mich., and Pauline Southern of Beckley. One Brother, Joe Vire of Cranberry, W.Va., and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. 2nd Timothy 4:7 "I have fought the good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." On Wednesday, Nov. 9th, 2011, our most cherished Terry Cole of Harper Road "finished his course" at his home in Eccles after a long and courageous battle from cancer. He was 65 years of age. Affectionately known as TC, Terry Lewis Cole was born on June 15th, 1946, in Oak Hill. He was the dear son of the late Joe and Margaret Woicehovich. Terry’s paternal and maternal grandparents, Charles and Mary (Baba) Woicehovich and Ambros and Ann Cole, have preceded him in death. He loved his grandparents dearly. Terry spent his childhood at Eccles and Lanark. He was 1964 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1964. He worked in construction and the mining industry. Terry loved the outdoors. He liked hunting, fishing, photography and playing his guitar. He immensely enjoyed decorating for Christmas. Many folks looked forward to seeing his holiday decorations each season. Terry leaves to cherish his memory his loving wife of 39 years, Glenna Barker Cole. Terry and Glenna worshiped at the Oak Grove Christian Church. He was the proud father of Jacqueline Arthur and her husband, David, of Eccles; the doting "Paw Terry" of Shelly Arthur Black and her husband, William, of Morgantown and Ashley Arthur of Eccles; he was the fond brother of Johnny Woicehovich and his wife, Brenda, of Glen Daniel and Eddie March of Akron, OH; a large extended family survives as well as many special friends. Terry’s family wants you to know how brave he was during his illness. "He never complained, he was willing to try many different medical options in order to live. He cherished each day he was given. For Terry, every day was a gift!" On Sunday, Nov. 13th, at 2 p.m. we will remember the life of Terry Cole with a “Service of Remembrance” at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. Minister Kelly Gowan and the Rev. Carl Sellards will be officiating. Terry will then be laid to rest in the Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens at Prosperity. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday evening at the mortuary and one hour prior to the services on Sunday. The family wants to convey their gratitude to Dr. Larson, his associates, Robin, Nancy and the staff of the Raleigh Regional Cancer Center, Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley Appalachian Regional Hospital, Dr. Richard Wisman and the many other physicians who treated Terry during his illness and Hospice of Southern West Virginia. Susan Hoskins Thomas Ojala

Former Akron resident, Susan Hoskins Thomas Ojala, died Oct. 25, 2011 of natural causes while visiting family in Colorado. She is survived by her son, Eric Ojala and daughter, Sara Hatfield. Calling hours will be at Springfield Assembly of God on Friday, Nov. 4, 6 to 8 p.m. A memorial servce will be held Saturday, Nov. 5 at 11 a.m. at Springfield A/G, 1551 Canton Road, Akron, OH 44312, 330-733-8701.


HILLTOP - Michael (Jimmy) Linkswiler, 64, of Hilltop, passed away Sunday, October 16, 2011, at his residence. Born January 11, 1947, at Gatewood, he was the son of the late Michael B. Linkswiler and Helen Louise Nicholas Linkswiler. He won his courageous battle with cancer surrounded by his loving family and friends. Jimmy valiantly served his country in the U.S. Army for four years from 1964-1968. He was employed by Westmoreland Coal Company, Tams, WV, for 12 years where he worked side-by-side with his dad, Michael. God then blessed him with a new career at Appalachian Power Company where he worked for 17 years until his retirement in 1998. Jimmy was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather. He shared his love of the outdoors with his family. He loved spending special time with them camping, hunting and fishing. He attended Bethel Freewill Baptist Church for 35 years and was a member of Maple Fork Baptist Church for six years. Jimmy is survived by his loving and devoted wife Shelia of 43 years; daughter, Michelle of Charlotte, N.C.; son Michael Jr. and wife Amy of Oak Hill; grandchildren Bradley, Brooke, and Ty; seven brothers Roger Dale, Freddie, Terry Wayne, Darrell Gene, Paul, Jerry Don, and Buck; and several nieces and nephews. The family wishes to thank the wonderful caregivers from Southern West Virginia Hospice, Tammy, Melissa, Heather, Stephanie, and Amy, for the loving care shown to Jimmy and his family. They also wish to extend a special thank you to Dr. Motley from the Beckley Veterans Hospital. SANDSTON, Va. - James Stewart Toney, 65, entered into the presence of His Lord on September 3, 2011, surrounded by the love and care of his family. Born December 18, 1945, in Carlisle, WV, he was the son of the late Chester and Anna Toney. A retired minister and mechanic, he used his many talents to fix things — everything from vehicles to computers to needs of the heart. He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964-1968, which included a tour of duty in Vietnam. He was a member of Anchor Baptist Church. He will be greatly missed by his wife of nearly 46 years, Mary Toney, a daughter Paula Toney of Charleston, WV, three sons: Chet Toney and wife Beth, of Aylett, Ken Toney and wife, Vicky, of Mechanicsville, and Randy and wife Marie, of Richmond; and six precious grandchildren: Seth, Sara, Emma, Owen, Colby, and Grady; three sisters: Drema Merritt of Mechanicsville, Margaret Mann and husband Bill of Brunswick, GA, and Suzanne Roberts and husband Kenny of Aylett. A service celebrating his life will be held Wednesday, September 7, 2011, at 11 a.m. at Nelsen Funeral Home & Crematory, 4650 S. Elizabeth Marie Forbes Hicks Davidson, 64, of Beckley went home to be with her Lord, Tuesday, March 15, 2011. Born December 10, 1946, she is the daughter of the late William and Lottie Tilley Forbes. Elizabeth loved spending time with her family and especially her grandchildren. She enjoyed playing Bingo and was a member of the Women’s Circle at her church. She retired from the Raleigh County Board of Education as a bus aide. Elizabeth was a member of the Jones Memorial Baptist Church of Beckley. In addition to her parents, Elizabeth is preceded in death by her 1st husband David Irving Hicks and 2nd husband Gary Cooper Davidson. Those left to cherish her memory include her daughter Tina Hicks Bell and husband Chris of Beckley; son Randy Hicks and wife Sandy of Beckley; grandchildren Ryan Barker of MD, Ashley Simms of Beckley, D.J., Corey and Brittany Hicks all of Beckley; sister Dolly Louise Estep and husband Tom of Charlotte, NC; nieces Natalie Ogden and Rachel Cauble both of Charlotte, NC. HOPEWELL, Va. — Alice Shumate Johnson, 64, of Hopewell, passed away Sunday, February 13, 2011 in John Randolph Medical Center. Mrs. Johnson was born in Beckley, W.Va., and had been a long time resident of the Hopewell area. She was preceded in death by her parents, Wanus Shumate, Loraine Shumate Collier and stepfather Donald Collier Sr.; her husband Jack W. Johnson; two sisters, Joyce Phipps, Glora Bryant and a step-brother, Donald Collier Jr. Mrs. Johnson was a teacher in the Petersburg Public School System. She is survived by her daughter, Karen Matthews and her husband Jonathan; a son, Joel W. Johnson and his girlfriend, Whitney Cake; a grandson, Benjamin Matthews; a stepbrother, Richard Collier; a devoted niece, Sandra Fields and numerous other family and friends. Jim Monk died suddenly of a heart attack at home in Chicago Sept. 21, two days short of his 64th birthday. He was born on Sept. 23. Beckley, West Va. was his home as a child where his father operated Monk’s Mercantile, a general store. Jim moved to Aspen in the late ’60s where he worked at the Red Onion and the Paragon as a waiter, and later became the manager of the Jerome Bar. In late 1977, Jim moved to Chicago with photographer Sally Giesel where she pursued her career and Jim became involved in the financial markets. They married in 1978 and had two daughters, Darien and Ashley. Sally died suddenly in 1986. Years later, he would marry Kathy Schlameus and adopt her daughter, Cecily. The three girls became affectionately known as the “Monkettes.” Jim’s career in the markets began at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange where he worked for Lehman Brothers in eurodollar futures. He became an advisor, and the eyes and ears for some of the most significant players in those markets. He later worked for EDF Man, ABN AMRO and O’Connor and Associates. Throughout his life, Jim was an avid reader and had a passion for the guitar. He enjoyed the diversity of his friends who ranged from zillionaires to the common man, writers, artists, peace keepers, outlaws and any combination of the above. MESA, Ariz. — Riley R “Cowboy” Cross Jr., 65, of Mesa, Ariz., passed away Oct. 14, 2010. He was born Nov. 25th, 1944, in Beckley, W.Va. He was the son of the late Riley and Rachel Cross of Beckley. He graduated from WWHS, class of 1964. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Vietnam War. He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Kenny Cross; three brothers, Leoda, Cornlius and Odelless Cross; and one nephew, Gary Cross. He is survived by his wife, Vera; two daughters, Tammy Cross of Mesa, Ariz., Racheal (Carl) Stephens of Huntington, W.Va.; one brother, Cleophus Cross of Crab Orchard, W.Va.; four sisters, Elvira (Fred) Furnari of Dayton, Ohio, Faye (Don) Cooper of Crab Orchard, W.Va., Retha Cooper of Christiansburg, Va., Delta Cross of Radford, Va.; six grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews and special friends Dallas and Margie Hatcher of Christiansburg, Va.

MAPLE FORK — Maddy Carol Daniels, age 64, of Maple Fork, West Virginia, went home to be with Jesus at her home on Thursday, December 9, 2010. Born on December 3, 1946, at Stanaford, WV, she was the daughter of the late Orphal Daniels and Belva Logan Daniels, and was also preceded in death by a brother, Stevie Daniels. Miss Daniels was a retired school teacher with 37 years of service, having taught most of her career at Scarbro Elementary School in Fayette County. Miss Daniels was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley College, and received her B.S. degree in education from Morris Harvey College. She received her master’s degree in Education with the West Virginia College of Graduate Studies. Miss Daniels had made her home at Maple Fork for over thirty years. She was a member of the Sandbranch Worship Center. Survivors include her brother, David Matthew Daniels of Maple Fork, West Virginia; and special pets Tiger and Reese. Funeral services will be conducted at the Rose and Quesenberry Peace Chapel on Wednesday, December 15, 2010, at 1 p.m. with Pastor Ken Souder, and Rev. Johnny Catlett officiating. WAGRAM, N.C. — Sharon Lee Sharp, Ph.D., formerly of Beckley, passed away on Saturday, Sept. 4, 2010, at the age of 63. Sharon was born in Beckley, W.Va. on Jan. 23, 1947, she was the loving daughter of Wanda Vee Keys Sharp and the late Roger Andrew Sharp. Sharon was a Professor with the University of North Carolina in Pembroke retiring after 20 years of dedicated service in the University of North Carolina Systems. Dr. Sharp also taught at West Virginia University and served the state of West Virginia as a commissioner of education. She enjoyed reading, world travel and painting and especially loved spending time with her family. She is survived by her husband of 16 years, Thomas “Tom” Leach of the home; her daughter, Caroline Coletta and husband, Brian of Brooklyn, N.Y., and two step daughters, Karen Leach of Hickory, N.C., Heather Lankford and husband, Andrew of Harrisonburg, Va.; her mother, Wanda V. Sharp of Princeton; a sister, Diane Sharp-Keys of Roanoke, Va.; a brother, Richard Sharp of Charlottesville, Va.; her grandchildren, Emma Lankford and Andrew Lankford and nieces, Heather Sharp-Keys and Kelli Sharp and nephew, Ryan Sharp. The family is planning a memorial service for 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, 2010, at Pipestem State Park, Pipestem, W.Va. Charles Douglas Wood, 46, of Sophia, died Saturday, Oct. 14, 1989, in Beckley Hospital after a long illness. He was a retired mechanic. Surviving: wife, Naomi K. Adkins Wood; sons, Melvin Ray and Brian Keith, of Sophia; daughter, Carrie Charlene Wood of Sophia; parents, Charles Edward and Geraldine Irene Richards Wood of Glen White; sister, Elizabeth Marie Milam of Hopewell, Va. Service will be 2 p.m. Tuesday at Williams-Blue Ridge Funeral Home, Sophia, with the Rev. Carl Wingo officiating. Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley. Susan Bower Chadwell LeMaire died on Sept. 2, 2009. She was born on June 12, 1946. No obituary is available.

Peggy Jean Davis, 63, of Beckley, died Sunday, September 19, 2010, in a Charleston hospital following a short illness. Born on January 21, 1947, in Crab Orchard, W.Va., she was the daughter of Virginia Maxine Holt Cole of Beckley and the late John Sheldon Cole. She was also preceded in death by a granddaughter Ashley Wyatt and a son-in-law David Wyatt. She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be missed by all. She loved to read and spend time with her grandchildren. Survivors in addition to her mother include her husband, Charles Davis, three sons Charles A. Davis and fiancé Liz Richardson of Morgantown W.Va., William C. Davis and fiancé Christy Gray of Holly Hill, and Henry Clyburn and wife Leigh Ann of Crab Orchard; one daughter Angela Lynn Wyatt of Beckley; two sisters, Johnny Sue Alderson and husband Frank of Leesville, La., and Elizabeth May Webb of Monroe County; two brothers John Kelly Cole and Samuel Cole, both of Beckley; a special former daughter-in-law, Jennifer Davis and daughter Victoria of Beckley; 15 grandchildren, Tiffany, David, Alicia Michelle Wyatt, Adam, Isabella, Lucas, Phoebe Davis, Katelyn, Abigail Browning, Audrey Davis, Korbin, Kalyn Clyburn, Austin, Dustin Lusk; several nephews and nieces including special nephews Philip Cole and wife Jessica and children John and Samuel, and Byron Webb. In the early morning hours of Wednesday, September 8th, 2010 our most loved Gayle Alley Ross of Wandering Lane, Beaver, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House. She was 63 years of age. Named after her father, Kerma Gayle Alley was born on December 5th, 1946 in Beckley. The second of three daughters, her parents were the late Kermit and Pauline Arnold Alley. Her sister, Teresa Elaine Sagel died in December of 2009. Gayle, as she was affectionately know all her life grew up in Beckley on Porter Street. She was a 1964 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. After high school Gayle enrolled at the Little French Beauty Academy in Bluefield where she was training to be a hairdresser. While living in Bluefield, she met a Bluefield boy, Richard Conner Ross. Gayle and Richard have celebrated 44 wonderful years of marriage. Richard’s work with the Rish Equipment Company took him and Gayle to many different places to live; they eventually settled in Marietta, Ga., where they resided for 16 years. Gayle loved her home and the Marietta area. Family ties brought them back to Raleigh County in 1993 where they settled on Wandering Lane. Gayle enjoyed being a homemaker. In her leisure time, she liked to needle point and paint in oil. In addition to Richard, Gayle is survived by her loving sister, Beverly Jo Lytton of Mooresville, N.C.; she was the dear aunt of nephews, Robby, Scott and Greg Lytton and JJ Sagel. On Saturday, September 11th, at 11 a.m. we will remember the life of Gayle with a Service of Remembrance at the Melton Mortuary Chapel at 1200 Harper Road, Beckley. Donald A. Perry, 57, of Chandler died April 28, 2004. Donald was Director of the National Resource Center for Information Technology In Child Welfare for the Child Welfare League of America. From 1978 to 2002 he was with the Department of Economic Security, Child Protective Services. He was a graduate of Wheeling College in West Virginia, and held an MBA from Ball State University Muncie Indiana. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran, serving 10 years. He is survived by his wife Nancy, daughter Krista, 3 brothers, 2 nieces, and a nephew. There will be visitation Tuesday 6-8 p.m., with Memorial Service 7 p.m. at Lakeshore Mortuary, 1815 S. Julia Kay (Lilly) Robertson, a member of the WWHS Class of 1964, died on July 15, 2005. Memorial services were held on July 22, 2005, at the Sowell Funeral Home in Milton, Florida. Her remains were cremated and the urn was placed next to her first husband, Bill Flaitz, on July 28, 2005, at the Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Orange City, Florida. Julia was born on June 21, 1946. She leaves behind one daughter, Ann Marie Flaitz, of Florida; brothers Julian Lilly (twin) of Alexandria, Va., Robert Lilly of Jacksonville, Florida; Eddie Lilly of Hanover, Pa.; and sisters Emma Lee Bennett of Fredericksburg, Va., and Nora Austin of Sebring, Fla. She also leaves behind three grandchildren.

OAK HILL — James A. Tincher, 63, of Oak Hill, our beloved husband, father, granddad, brother, uncle, and friend, departed this life on Saturday, Feb. 6, 2010, at Appalachian Regional Hospital. Jim made his peace with God and entered heaven with the doors wide opened. He was a very compassionate person. He helped a lot of people throughout his life and he never expected anything in return. Jim touched many people’s lives. He was loved very much and will be missed. Our lives will never be the same without him. Jim was born on Oct. 9, 1946, to the late Jim and Nellie Tincher of Beckley. He was also preceded in death by brothers, Bobby Joe Tincher and Charlie Bill Tincher and sisters, Irene Jones, Mildred Miller and Gaye Kelly. Jim was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, Class of 1964. He began business as Jim’s Sheet Metal, which became Economy Heating in march 1979, where he was owner and operator until his retirement in 2009, where he handed it over to his wife and children. Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Carolyn Sue Tincher; a son, Charles Jason Tincher and his wife, Misty; a daughter, Robin Sue Reece and husband, Billy, and his four precious grandchildren, Hunter Cole and Caitlin McKenzie Reece and Aaron Gage and Dylan Ty Tincher; a brother, Tommy Ray Tincher and wife, Patty of Reidsville, N.C.; and a host of brothers-in-law, and sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews. Theresa Biggs Resler Theresa Biggs Resler, 63, of Charleston passed away peacefully on Tuesday, Feb. 2, 2010, after a long, courageous battle with breast cancer. Born in Beckley on Feb. 5, 1945, she was the daughter of the late Earl and Leona Biggs. Theresa graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School, Beckley, and attended Concord College. After raising two children, she returned to school and received her bachelor’s degree from West Virginia State University. Her work career encompassed many fields, including C&P Telephone, the banking industry and retail sales. Her last employment was as administrative assistant at St. Anthony School. Theresa was a devoted wife, a very supportive mother to her two children, and a proud grandmother. Theresa was a “goer and doer.” She loved being involved in groups and activities. She was a huge WVU fan. Theresa was known as “the Card Lady” because of all the mailings to friends and families. She served as an officer of the WVSU Alumni Association and was a member of two Red Hat groups and Skyview Garden Club. Theresa was admired for her spirit and perseverance and was known as a courageous fighter in her battle with breast cancer. She is survived by her husband, Thomas Resler; daughter, Mary Beth Resler Dillon and grandson, Jacob, of Farmville, Va.; son, Matthew Thomas (Kristine) Resler and granddaughters, Alicia, Vanessa and Victoria, of Tinley Park, Ill.; sisters, Barbara (Eric) Auerbach of Suffield, Conn., Mary Biggs of Morgantown and Martha Delekta of Strongsville, Ohio; niece, Ann Delekta of Columbus, Ohio; and nephews, Steven Auerbach of Winter Park, Fla., and Mark Delekta of Seattle, Wash. Her body was donated to the Human Gift Registry at the WVU Health Science Center. A Memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 6, at St. Anthony Catholic Church, Charleston, with visitation at 10 a.m. A Memorial Mass will also be held at 6 p.m. Friday at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, South Charleston. Tleatha Lilly Bennett Sablan. Tleatha Sablan, age 62, of Beckley, W.Va., passed away on Thursday, October 8, 2009, in the Bowers Hospice House in Beckley, following a long illness. Born November 23, 1946, in Fayette County, W.Va., she was the daughter of the late Elden and Frances Ramsey Bennett. Tleatha had been employed as a dispatcher for the Highway Patrol in San Diego, Calif., but, after retiring, returned home to the mountains of her youth, in West Virginia. Other than her parents, she is preceded in death by three sisters, Sarah Fix, Barbara Prince and Katherine Ruff. Those left to cherish her memory are her husband, Joe Sablan of Beckley; three sons, Joseph and his wife Kristin, stationed with the U.S. Army, Franklin and his wife Kendra of San Diego, Thomas and his wife, Debbie, of San Diego; a daughter, Linda Casper and her husband Jason of Boston, Mass.; two brothers, William “Bill” Bennett of Florida and Wilburn “Eddie” Bennett of Talcott, W.Va.; one sister, Anna N. Anthony Lewis "Tony" Moncada, 50, of 509 Temple Street., Beckley, died Tuesday, October 29, 1996, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. Born Sept. 17, 1946, at Beckley, he was the son of Mary Fares Moncada of Beckley and the late Louis Moncada. Mr. Moncada was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, and was a lifelong resident of Beckley. Mrs. Barbara Jean Goins, 38, of Piney View, died Sunday May 26, 1985 in a Beckley hospital after a short Illness. Carol Lane Christian Klick died at home on September 22, 1991 at the age of 44 after a courageous battle with breast cancer. Carol Lane was born on January 12, 1947, in Beckley, West Virginia, where she lived until she left to attend college at West Virginia Wesleyan. There she met her husband of 25 years, Paul S. Klick III. After a several years in the U.S. Air Force, Carol Lane and Paul settled in Matawan, New Jersey, where they began raising their three children, Kristen, Paul and Jeffrey. The family moved to Plano, Texas in 1982, where Carol Lane was active in her church, Custer Road United Methodist, teaching Sunday school, volunteering with the youth groups and participating in many other church activities. Later, in 1989, the family relocated again to Roswell, Georgia. Carol Lane was survived by her husband; three children; a sister, Marcee Christian Walker of Fairfax, Virginia (married to James F. Walker, formerly of Beckley); her father-in-law, Paul Klick of Basking Ridge, New Jersey; and many, many members of her extended family and friends. She has six grandchildren: Kristen and her husband Robert White, of University Park, Maryland, have two boys, George Eli and John Edwin. Paul and his wife Ashley, of Alexandria, Virginia, have two children, Ellis Carmichael and Paul Stanley V (“Chappie”). Jeffrey and his wife Elizabeth, of Havertown, Pennsylvania, have two children, Avery Lane and Noel Shepherd. Joint Funeral services for Harry Raymond (Buddy) Ellison and Howard Edwin Lambert Jr., will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, Sunday who died at 12:20 a.m. Friday in an automobile mishap at Price Hill in Raleigh County. Ellison and Lambert were passengers in a 1970 model foreign car which was struck head on by John Toney. Ellison 25, of 211 Holley Court, Barboursville, was born at Beckley Sept. 24, 1946, the son of Harry Raymond and Opal Walsh Ellison of 103 Edward Street., Beckley. He was employed as the office manager of Lambert Transfer Co. in Beckley. A graduate of Marshall University, he was a member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, the First Baptist Church of Beckley, and the Huntington Junior Chamber of Commerce. He was married to the former Patricia Lambert on August 26, 1966. She survives him at home. George A. Metz, 58, 136 Fantasy Pvt. Dr., Elizabethton, died Wednesday, October 20, 2004 at Sycamore Shoals Hospital following a brief illness. A native of Beckley, W.Va., he was a son of the late John William and Francis Agnes Ligocki Metz. He worked in the construction industry as a designer. Mr. Metz was of the Catholic faith. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and U.S.E.T. Mr. Metz served in the U.S. Army. Hinton: Helen "Carol" Allen, 53 of 312 Seventh Ave., died Sunday, October 24, 1999 at a Beckley hospital, following injuries received in an automobile accident. Born, Jan. 14, 1946, at Cirtsville, she was the daughter of Kathleen Lafferty Piotrowski of Maple Fork and the late Carlos Lively. Mrs. Allen was a LPN at Greystone Inn, was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School and received her LPN training in Summers County. She had been a resident of Hinton for the past 10 years and attended Cooks Chapel at Pipestem. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Gary Wayne Lively and Lee Lively. Joint Funeral Services for Howard Edwin Lambert Jr., and Harry Raymond (Buddy) Ellison, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in the Melton Mortuary Chapel, Sunday, who died at 12:20 a.m. on Friday, in an automobile mishap at Price Hill, in Raleigh County. Ellison and Lambert were passengers in a 1970 model foreign car which was struck head on by John Toney. Lambert 25, of Midway, was born in Beckley, April 21, 1946. He was the son of Howard E. and Jessie Dunbar Lambert of 312 Witherspoon Street. He was employed as office manager for the Roberts Shafer Co. at Affinity. He was a graduate of Morris Harvey College and a member of the First Baptist Church in Beckley, the Beckley Investment Club and the Beckley-Raleigh County YMCA. He was married to the former Pamela Kay Shrewsbury, November 1, 1969. She survives him at home. In addition to his wife and parents, he is survived by one daughter, Linda Kay at home; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Patricia Ellison of Barboursville and Miss Sue Ann Lambert of Beckley; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Lena Lambert of Beckley, and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Glenn Dunbar of Washington, DC. Jerome Harold Saks. An ecumenical memorial service for Jerry Saks will be held at 8 p.m. Friday at the New River Unitarian Fellowship Church at 911 S. Kanawha St. in Beckley. Saks, 49, of Beckley was found dead Feb. 1. The state medical examiner’s office has ruled that Saks died of natural causes. The Revs. Bev. Kinraide and George Exoo will officiate at the service. Kinraide also said the Kaddish, the Jewish prayer for the dead, will be read. Saks, was a silversmith who made earrings, pendants and other jewelry, some of which went on sale at Tamarack in December. For many years, his family operated Saks Jewelers in downtown Beckley. Jerry Wayne Handley, 58, a resident of Elkins, passed away Friday evening, Oct. 7, 2005, in the emergency department of Davis Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 2, 1946, at Huntington, a son of Madge Handley Cales, who survives and the late Clyde Robert Handley. On Dec. 20, 1969, in Puerto Rico, he was married to the former Carmen Isaura Ruberte, who survives. Also surviving are one son, Jerry Dwayne Handley, who is a graduate student at West Virginia University at Morgantown; and his twin brother, Terry Lee Handley, of Beckley. Jerry was a graduate of Anderson College in Indiana with a bachelor’s degree in social work. He worked as an air traffic control specialist with the Federal Aviation Administration for 31 years prior to his retirement. Jerry dedicated his life to serve, listen and counsel others in the only way he could. He was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Puerto Rico and Columbia. He was an avid reader since childhood. Because of his love for reading, his main goal while in Columbia was to establish a library in an isolated community. While he was in Elkins, he coached minor league baseball for two seasons. Dr. John D. Lodmell, Hospital District Board Chairman Community Leader, dies at 50. John D. Lodmell, 50, of 9056 Clifton Road, Woodford County, one of this community’s most active and respected leaders, died Friday, February 28, 1997, at his residence. Born in Beckley, W. Va. he was a graduate of the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, with a Ph. D. in Chemistry. Dr. Lodmell was chairman of the Woodford County Hospital District Board, a member of the Versailles Woodford County Parks and Recreation Board, past Vice-Chairman and member of the Board of Directors of Woodford Hospital, was active with the Boy Scouts, and was a past president and active with the Woodford County 4-H Council. He was the associate vice president of operations for LabCorp of Louisville, was a member of the Association of Clinical Chemists, the American Chemical Society, and the Clinical Laboratory Management Association. He was a member of the Versailles United Methodist Church. Dr. Lodmell is survived by his wife, Donita Neff Lodmell, Woodford County: his Mother, Virginia Lodmell, Piney View, W. Va,: his Father and Stepmother, Rullell and Hazel Lodmell, Moundsville, W. Va,: three daughters, Carlene, Darlene, and Marianne Lodmell, Versailles: four sons, Second Lt. Monty Dwight "Buck" Johnson, 61 of Rising Sun, MD, died Tuesday, July 15, 2008 in the Union Hospital of Cecil County, Elkton, MD. Born in Maben, WV, on September 29, 1946, he was the son of the late Earl and the late Effie Faye (Basham) Johnson. He was the beloved husband of Dorothy A. Johnson of Rising Sun, MD. Mr. Johnson served during the Vietnam War in the Army from 1968-1969, a member of C-Troop 1st Squadron 1st Calvary. He was a Purple Heart and Bronze Star V-Device recipient. He worked for Chrysler, retiring after 35 years of service. He was an avid WV Mountaineers fan, a Dallas Cowboys fan and loved hunting. Most of all he loved spending time with his grandkids. Mr. Johnson was a member of Union Lodge No. 48, First Regiment of Dragoons, 1st Squadron 1st Calvary Association and the Tall Cedars In addition to his loving wife, survivors include: his children: Montica D. Phyllis Joyce Prunest, 58, of MacArthur, was taken to Heaven on Thursday, April 1, 2004, at her home following a courageous battle with cancer. Phyllis was born Feb. 19, 1946, at Fitzpatrick, the daughter of the late John Swanson Stump and Carrie Smith Stump. Mrs. Prunest was an employee of Hill’s Department Store for over 15 years and Ames Department Store until going out of business. She was a lifelong resident of the Fitzpatrick-MacArthur area and was of the Christian faith. She enjoyed being at the river on weekends with her family and enjoyed cooking dinner for them. Family was the most important thing to her. Her strong will and determination kept her fighting her illness. She was loved and respected by all those who knew her and those left here to remember her. During her illness, she had strong faith and fought her battle to the very end with solemn grace. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Tommy Stump, Gary Stump and Claude Stump Sr. A sister, Virginia Parsons, and her father-in-law, Frank Prunest, whom she loved very much. Those left to love her and cherish her memory include her loving husband of 37 years, Frank Prunest, two daughters, Melissa Martin and husband, David of MacArthur and Deborah McKinney and husband Patrick, of Beckley. A lifelong resident of Beckley, he was a member of the Beckley Church Of God, once serving as its Associate Pastor. He was a 1968 graduate of Lee College in Cleveland, Tennessee and was a member of CONTACT and of the Beckley Beltway Association. DANIELS - Dennis Clifford Sanger, 51, of Daniels died March 15, 1998, of injuries received in an automobile accident. He attended Wesleyan Chapel, Beckley. RAINELLE - Ronald Edward Phillips, 55, passed away May 22 in Los Angeles following a long illness. Born May 27, 1946, in Washington, D.C., he was raised by his late grandparents, Dan and Kathleen Bosworth Phillips. Mr. Phillips graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley, Johnson Bible College in Knoxville, Tenn., and was a Vietnam Army veteran. He was manager of a local furniture mart and attended the Church of Christ in Rainelle. Surviving are his son, Dan Phillips of Rainelle. Betty Lou Thompson, 55, of 224 Beckley Ave., Beckley, died Saturday, Aug. 25, 2001, at 3:15 p.m. She died at her home after an extended illness. Betty was born at Crab Orchard, Feb. 20, 1946, and was the daughter of Lessie Shrewsbury Thompson of Beckley and the late Samuel Owen Thompson. Betty was a Christian and a member of the Crab Orchard Baptist Church. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1964. In addition to her mother, she is survived by two sisters, Frances L. Thompson of Beckley and Joyce A. Liskey and her husband, Winston, of Harrisonburg, Va.; two nieces, Windria Wenger and her husband, Charles, of Lancaster, Pa., and Winona Scott and her husband, Tyrone, of Harrisonburg; a nephew, Winston Liskey II and his wife, Jan, of Harrisonburg; a great-niece, Katlyn Rebecca Liskey of Harrisonburg; two aunts, Lora M. Oxley of Georgetown, Texas, and Brookie McCary of Goldsboro, N.C.; an uncle, Bill Shrewsbury of Wickliffe, Ohio; and numerous cousins. She also had a host of special friends whom she dearly loved. She was formerly employed by Beckley Hotel and was a life-long resident of Raleigh County. She was preceded in death by a brother, Ellsworth M. Vass, Jr..; a grandson, Roger Lee Stables, III; paternal grandparents, Price and Leslie Evelyn Toney Vass; maternal grandparents, Charles Edward and Rebecca Jane Sarver Bolt; and her first husband, Bobby Lane. He was born in Morgantown on Dec. 3, 1946, a son of Francis Robertson Knapp of West End, N.C., and the late Norman Knapp. Rob was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in Beckley and West Virginia Tech and had worked for EDS of Belpre and the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of the Vietnam Conflict and attended St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. In addition to his mother, Rob is survived by his wife of 35 years, Martha Surbaugh Knapp; three sons, Andy Knapp of Beckley, John Knapp of Fredericksburg, Va., and Thomas Knapp of Dallas, Texas; three grandchildren, Breanne Knapp, Brady Knapp and Bryce Knapp; two brothers, James Knapp of Durham, N.C., and William "Bill" Knapp of Sasebo, Japan; a sister, Marybeth Cecil of Durham, N.C.; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his father, he was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Knapp. Service will be 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church with the Rev. Bill Matheny as celebrant. Burial will follow in Sunset Memorial Park, Beckley at the convenience of the family. George Theodore "Ted" Starr Jr., 59, of Johnstown Road, Beckley, died Saturday, Aug. 6, 2005, in a Beckley hospital following a short illness. He was born on July 1, 1946, at Beckley, the son of Onida Munsey Starr of Beckley, and the late George T. Starr Sr. Survivors include his children: Ted Starr Jr. of Tennessee, Shannon Starr of Oregon, Jamie Cole of Florida, Stacie Lacy and Sally Massey, both of Beckley; his grandchildren, Ashley, Amber, Amanda, Jonathan, Kourtney, Shelby, Ainsley, Sebastian, Jamie Michelle, Zachary, Carlie and Travis and by a sister, Donna Elkins of Beckley. John Robert Lawson, 60, of Beckley, passed away Friday, March 23, 2007, at the University of Virginia Hospital in Charlottesville, Va., following a short illness. Born Jan. 28, 1947, in Welch, he was the son of Helen Serge Lawson and the late John H. Lawson. John was a postal employee for the U.S. Postal Service in Beckley, retiring in 2002 as Postmaster of the East Beckley Station with 33 years of service. Mr. Lawson was a 1964 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, an avid bowler and fondly known as “Awesome Lawson” at Leisure Lanes, and a member of ACS, since 1968. His love of his children, his family and music was well known and shared with all of his close friends. Survivors include his mother, Helen S. Lawson of Beckley; children, Sean R. Lawson of Beckley and Natalie J. Lawson of Baltimore, Md.; and brothers, Michael V. Lawson and Lawrence J. Lawson, both of Beckley. Herman Eugene “Gene” Leeber of Stevensville, MD died Sunday May 13, 2007 at Spa Creek Center in Annapolis, MD. He was 60. Born on October 4, 1946 in Beckley, W.Va. the son of the late Herman Leeber and Thelma Gouge. He was a graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School class of 1964. He married Linda J. Mann on June 11, 1966. They would later reside in Prince Georges County, MD and for 25 years in Lothian, MD. In the mid 1990’s they moved to the Eastern Shore to Stevensville, MD. Mr. Leeber’s career was in Coffee sales and was the owner & operator of Heavenly Brew Coffee Service. He enjoyed watching Star Trek movies and reading. He is survived by his beloved wife Linda J. Leeber of Stevensville, MD Two sons Michael E. Leeber and Rodney S. Leeber both of Dunkirk, MD. A brother Robert T. Leeber of Beckley, W.Va. A sister Sandra L. Pittman of Sophia, W.VA. On Thursday, May 8, 2008, Jienell Gilkerson Wall, of Jasper Drive, died at her home. She was 62 years of age. Born on March 12, 1946, in Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Homer Wilmer and Dotsie Gertrude Cole Riffe. Jienell was a 1964 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School. She attended Morris Harvey College and was a graduate of West Virginia Institute of Technology. Jienell retired from the Central Office of the Raleigh County Board of Education in June of 2007 after 39 years of service. An accomplished musician, she was of the Christian faith. Thomas Aden Phillips, 62, of Beckley, passed away Thursday, May 29, 2008, in a Charleston hospital following a courageous battle with Gulliane Barre syndrome. Born Feb. 10, 1946, in Beckley, he was the son of Wilma L. Phillips of Beckley and the late Wendell Phillips. Tom was a retired teacher and administrator from the Fayette County Board of Education. He was a 1964 graduate of Woodrow Wilson high school, where he was a member of the football hall of fame, and a 1974 graduate of West Virginia University of which he was a member of the football team. He received his masters degree from WV College of Graduate Studies in 1978. He was a medic in the Army during the Vietnam era, stationed at a hospital in Munich, Germany. Tom was an assistant coach at WV Tech. He served on the WVSSAC Board of Appeals. He also taught at Mullens High School, Valley High School and Gauley Bridge, and was Assistant Principal at Oak Hill High School. He received many awards and honors during his career. Tom was a previous Sunday School teacher of the Baptist faith. Tom was an avid reader and loved WVU sports. Most of all, he enjoyed his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by one brother, Richard Phillips. Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 38 years, Linda Sue (Short) Phillips; one daughter, Liz Anne Vance and her husband, Richard, of Beckley, and his two grandchildren that he loved so much, Aden and Savannah Vance; two sisters, Deborah Phillips of Washington, D.C., and Judy Meadows and her husband, Steve, of Beckley; two brothers, Kenneth Phillips of Beckley and Wendell Phillips Jr. and his wife, Sara, of Charlotte, N.C. VIRGINIA BEACH — Retired advertising executive, Albert Palmer Farley Jr., 62, died June 18, 2008, at his home in Virginia Beach. A non-smoker for 30 years, he lived seven months after being diagnosed with lung cancer. Palmer co-founded Barker, Campbell & Farley Advertising in 1980 and later served as its president and chairman. The company (now BCF) became a leading regional advertising agency with a reputation for supporting community endeavors. Palmer and his co-workers gave their talent generously to area organizations and causes. Through internships they helped dozens of young people launch careers in communications. Throughout his life, Palmer was appreciated and loved for his wit and sense of humor. Born in Beckley, W.Va., he was the son of a newspaperman and worked as a “go-fer” at Beckley’s newspaper before attending West Virginia University where he earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in journalism and advertising. Prior to opening BC&F, Palmer was director of new business at Lawler Ballard Advertising in Norfolk. Among his community involvements, Palmer greatly enjoyed serving on the Virginia Aquarium Foundation board and on the vestry of Galilee Episcopal Church in the 1990’s. Palmer’s purest pleasure was his family. He is survived by Ann, his wife of 40 years; daughters, Alison Farley and Laura Ogden; grandson, Dayton Palmer Ogden; son-in-law Dayton Ogden; and close family friend, Marie Ferrarini. ELKTON, Va. — Gary Wayne Bowling, 61, of Elkton, Va., formerly of Beckley, went to be with the Lord on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2008. He was the son of the late Clifford and Betty Wilson Bowling. Gary was a lifelong resident of Beckley, before moving to Elkton in 1987. He was in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1964 to 1968 and was a Vietnam veteran. Gary was a coal miner for Westmoreland Coal Company for 17 years and worked for New River Coal as a mine foreman and fire boss. When he moved to Elkton, he was employed by Nielsen Construction. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Diana Prince Bowling; sons, Eddie Bowling of Charleston, S.C., and Melvin Bowling and his wife Jennifer of Shenandoah, Va.; two grandsons, Logan and Dalton Bowling; brothers, Ronnie Bowling and his wife Carla of Miami, Fla., Mark Bowling and his wife Renee of Shady Spring; sisters, Nancy Prince of Charlotte, N.C., Connie Paugh and her husband Ralph; Judy Williams and her husband Terry all of Shady Spring; and Kim Brown and her husband Tim of Morristown, Tenn. CHARLESTON — Wilda Jean Tippner, 63, of Charleston, died Friday, Oct. 31, 2008, at the Memorial Hospital, Charleston, after a long illness. Born July 30, 1945, at Beckley, she was a native of Raleigh County and lived in Charleston the past 29 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ira and Grace Gunther, and a sister, Fran Rejonas. Survivors include her husband, Fred Tippner; sons, John Steven Tippner of Charleston and David Michael Tippner of Gainesville, Fla.; brothers, Ira “Jim” Gunther of Charleston, Jack Gunther of Dunkirk, Md., and Michael Gunther of Beckley; sisters, Peggy Sue Zaccheo and Iris Sweeney, both of Beckley, and Ann Anderson of Vincennes, Ind.; and grandchildren, Jennifer and Alyssa Tippner. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 8, 2008, at Mt. Tabor Cemetery, Mt. Tabor Road, next to Mt. Tabor Baptist Church. Presque Isle — Joan D. Donnelly, "The Little Bunky", 53, died Thursday, September 16, 1999, at a Presque Isle hospital. She is going to be missed by all those who knew her. The only thing she ever did in excess was caring and loving. No one was ever turned away from her door or table. She brought joy to all those around her. This world will be a little darker now that this "lighter of candles" has left us. She is survived by a daughter, Amy Kay of Niantic, Conn,; a son Joseph Donnelly of Missouri; a brother, Ricky Bainbridge of Dry Creek, W.
