On this past Sunday, May 10, 2009, that day dedicated to mothers, our beloved Mother, Goldie Marcum of Emerald Court, Beckley, formerly of Lanark, passed away at the Raleigh General Hospital following a long illness. She was in her 85th year. Born Goldie Helen Hanks on Feb. 26, 1924, at Lanark, she was the youngest of seven children born to the late Fred and Ocie Redden Hanks. Her sister, Bess Richmond; and brothers, James, Willard, Clen, Okey and Earl Hanks, all preceded Goldie in death. Goldie spent her childhood at Lanark. A 1942 graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School, she was a private caregiver and had worked at Pine Lodge Nursing Home. A resident of Emerald Court here in Beckley, Goldie had been a longtime resident of Lanark. She attended Mabscott Holiness Church. In her leisure time, she enjoyed playing bingo and croqueting. In addition to her family, Goldie was preceded in death by her husband, Julius Marcum on Feb. 20, 1974; a son, Richie Randall Marcum; a grandson, Joseph Randolph Marcum; and a son-in-law, David Scott Snuffer. At the end of the day, when her children look back on their mother’s life, they recall a very independent woman. Widowed at the age of 50, she was a “tough little bird” who had to forge her way through life. And so now, it is most fitting they say goodbye to her on Mother’s Day. “So, take your flight little bird. Go see your God and all your family that has gone on before you.” She is the loving mother of four surviving children; they are Julius (Skip) Marcum Jr., and his wife, Wanda, Patricia Faye Snuffer and her companion, Curtis W. Tate, Gregory Wayne Marcum and his wife, Sharon, and Homer (Porky) Marcum and his wife, Donna, all of Beckley; the doting MaMa of six grandchildren, Tomora Howard, Lisa Dawn Adkins, Jill Tilson, David Dirk Snuffer, Kelly Marcum Wright and Scott Marcum; the great-grandmother of Troy, Torrie, Travis, Amy Jo, Justin, Julie, Christopher, Madison, Ian, Ashlin and Cassidy; several nieces and nephews; a host of friends, among them Sharon Ewing and Jean Radford; and her dear friend and caregiver, Joyce Lynch. The family would like to publicly thank the girls of the Heartland Rehabilitation Unit and to Pam Acord, RN, 2nd floor nurse at Raleigh General Hospital, for all their love and kindness. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Thursday at the Melton Mortuary Chapel with the Rev. Carlyle Blomme officiating. Goldie will then be entombed beside her dear Julius at the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum in Beckley.
