Proverbs 31:10: “Who can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies…” And so, on Thursday afternoon, December 23rd, 2010, our most cherished wife, mother and grandmother, Mary Ann Fama, went to spend Christmas in Heaven. A resident of Stanaford Acres, Mary Ann passed away at the Bowers Hospice House. She was in her 87th year, 4th month and 9th day of her life. The youngest of three children, Mary Ann Huzoski was born on August 16th, 1923, at Oswald in Fayette County. Her parents, the late Joseph and Ann Guthman Huzoski, immigrated to this country from Czechoslovakia. Mary Ann’s brothers, Andy and Mike, have preceded her in death. Mary Ann spent her childhood at Oswald. After graduating from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1941, she went to Huntington to study to be a hairdresser. Mary Ann later opened the Courtesy Beauty Shop on McCreery Street in Beckley. Around the corner on South Fayette Street was a shoe cobbler by the name of Mike Verde. Apprenticing under Mr. Verde was a handsome Italian by the name of George Fama. Fate would bring George and Mary Ann together. They would marry on July 17th, 1948, celebrating 62 years of marriage this year. To this union they were blessed with four children, Joseph Phillip Fama and his wife, Becky, Anastasia Fama Morton and her husband, Ray, twins, Michael Fama and his wife, Heather, and Phillip Fama and his wife, Kelly, all of Beckley. Mary Ann was the doting “Grandma” of George and Joey Fama, Alexander Morton, Nicole, Taylor, Eli and Rachel Fama, Ethan Fama, Logan, Tanner and Kameron Cline. A devout Catholic, Mary Ann and her family worship at St. Francis de Sales Parish. She was the dear aunt to many nieces and nephews and the fond sister-in-law to the Fama family. We her family are left to cherish her memory. Mary Ann enjoyed reading, cooking, and shopping. She worked at Woodrow Wilson High School in the cafeteria where she known for her desserts. But at the end of the day it was Mary Ann’s love of family that was her reason to live. She adored her husband and children. She cherished spending time with her grandchildren. Although it is “bittersweet” to give her up at Christmas, what more fitting time for her to go to Heaven than when all her family would be together to comfort each other. She will be the “shining star” on our Christmas trees in years to come. On Tuesday, December 28th, at 11 a.m. the Funeral Liturgy will be celebrated at St. Francis de Sales Church with Monsignor Samuel Sacus as the celebrant. The Rite of Committal will follow in the Sunset Memorial Park Mausoleum where Mary Ann is to be entombed. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Melton Mortuary Chapel. The Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. led by Rev. Mr. Donald Wise. Pallbearers will be family members. The family suggests donations of sympathy can be made to the Bowers Hospice House, PO Box 1472, Beckley, WV 25802. or to the St. Francis de Sales Catholic School, 622 South Oakwood Ave., Beckley, WV 25801. And with a thought of you we whispered, “Sleep In Heavenly Peace,” with such a different meaning this Christmas... Condolences may be sent to the family’s guestbook at www.meltonmortuary.com. Former WV House of Delegate representative Jackie Withrow of Beckley died on Thursday, November 11th, 2010, at the home of her nephew, Charles Neubert and his wife, Zona, at Crab Orchard. She was in her 92nd year. Beatrice Neubert was the youngest of three children born to the late Charles Frank and Willie Lee Flannigan Neubert. Affectionately known as “Jackie boy” because of her tomboy antics, she was born on March 28th, 1918, at Mabscott. Her sister, Hilda Crouch, brother, Austin “Dutch” Neubert, and her niece, Beatrice Kinsler, preceded her in death. Jackie spent her childhood at Mabscott. She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1936. In 1943 she married W.W. “Bill” Withrow. They were longtime residents of the Maxwell Hill community. In the early 1970s Jackie and Bill became volunteers in the Chapel at the Veterans Area Medical Center here in Beckley. Married for 56 years, Bill Withrow died on August 18, 1999. Jackie Withrow was a woman of boundless energy. She sold shoes, real estate and worked in sales for Beckley radio station WWNR. A woman ahead of her time, Jackie had a deep concern for people confined in state hospitals and institutions. In 1960 she decided to run for public office, the WV House of Delegates. The only woman among 24 candidates, she was one of the top four vote-getters. Jackie won the election and was re-elected eight more times. She earned the distinction of being the second longest-serving woman legislator in the history of West Virginia. Always the champion of those who needed long-term care, especially the mentally ill, Jackie was named the Chairman of the House, Health and Welfare Committee and eventually was the first woman in the history of the legislature to serve on the powerful Finance committee. Pinecrest Hospital has been renamed the Jackie Withrow Hospital in her honor. In the later years of her life Jackie Withrow volunteered thousands of hours at the VA Hospital here in Beckley. It is only fitting that Jackie was “called home” on Veterans Day. In addition to her nephew Charles and his wife, Zona, Jackie was blessed to have several great-nephews who enjoyed her company in these last years of her life. They are Shane Neubert, Bryan Coulter, Kenneth, Jimmy, Rusty and Jason Cozart. In the early morning hours of Thursday, September 16th, 2010, our aunt and friend, Eleanor Webb, passed away at the Bowers Hospice House. She was in her 82nd year. The youngest of nine children, Eleanor Lorrayne Webb was born on January 21, 1928, at her home on 5th Street here in Beckley, where she has lived her entire life. Her parents were the late Ernest and Ova Hawley Webb. Eleanor is the last survivor of her immediate family. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School Class of 1946, Eleanor began a career with C&P Telephone right out of high school. She retired with 36 years of service as an administrative assistant. Eleanor enjoyed her church, Memorial Baptist, throughout the years. She sang in the choir, participated in the Living Christmas Tree, was a member of the BYKOTA Sunday school class and loved to decorate the church for holidays. In her leisure time, she loved to garden. When her family recalls Eleanor, they remember her as the “Matriarch” of the Webb family. “We all knew Eleanor was in charge!” Eleanor was blessed with a large extended family of nieces and nephews. Among them are Nancy Lucas, Norma Jean Calfee, and Jack Williams, all of Beckley, and Thomas Webb of Hallandale, Fla. Eleanor’s dear friend Judy Kobelia was like one of her own family. As the years went by, the Webb family grew; there are many great-nieces and nephews, and among them are Jim Lucas, Lorna Lucas, and Tomi Lilly. Jim’s wife, Robin, was close to Eleanor. The great-great-nieces and nephews held “Auntie” in high regard. In the golden years of her life, she enjoyed their company, from baby-sitting to watching them grow into adulthood. This new generation which includes Luke and Holly Lucas, Blaine Udy and Katelyn Lilly will forever cherish her memory. On Saturday, September 18th, at 4 p.m. we will remember the life of Eleanor Webb with a service at Melton Mortuary. The Rev. Paul Blizard and Dr. Charles Bright will be officiating. Eleanor will then be laid to rest at Wildwood Cemetery beside her parents and her little sister, Lorna. The family will receive friends from 2 p.m. until the hour of the service on Saturday.
